Iranian director Jamil Rostami’s Jani Gal has won the Columbine Award of the Moondance International Film Festival in Boulder, Colorado.

The event’s Columbine Award goes to works, which reflect non-violent conflict resolution and alternatives to violence, or show why violent resolution to conflict is counter-productive.

Shot in Iraq’s Sulaimaniyah, Jani Gal depicts the cultural and political situation of Iraq during the 1940s and 50s.

Rostami’s Kurdish-language feature-length drama, which was based on a novel by Ibrahim Ahmed, was selected to represent Iraq in the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 2007 Academy Awards.

Jamil Rostami is an Iranian filmmaker of Kurdish origin, who has made numerous internationally acclaimed films including Requiem of Snow.

Iran’s Butterflies Die in Snow directed by Karim Azimi is also among the festival’s short film finalists.

The 2008 Moondance International Film Festival will be held from August 29 to September 1. The organizers have announced the winners prior to the awards ceremony, which will be held on Aug. 31st.
