Hossein Rezazadeh’s withdrawal from sports ahead of the Olympics came as a great shock to Iran, but the Iranian squad is set to make a powerful appearance in Beijing.

Weightlifting has been Iran’s main aim for medals in Olympics. Three of Iran’s five gold medals in the last two Olympic Games were in weightlifting, Hossein Tavakkoli and Rezazadeh in Sydney and the latter in Athens as well. Rezazadeh will probably accompany the Iranian team in Beijing and his presence will certainly boost the morale of young weightlifters.

Weightlifters Asqar Ebrahimi, Mohsen Beiranvand and Rashid Sharifi have replaced Rezazadeh in the Olympics’ weightlifting competitions which will be held from August 9-19.

However, the possibility of winning medals in martial arts and wrestling should not be ruled out. Alireza Dabir won a gold medal in freestyle wrestling in Sydney and Hadi Saei, who will also be present in Beijing, won a taekwondo gold in Athens.

Reza Naderian and Sara Khoshjamal Fekri are the other two Iranians athletes who will take part in the Olympics’ taekwondo competitions from August 20-23.

Hamid Sourian, Ali Mohammadi, Qasem Rezaei, Masoud Hashemzadeh, Saman Tahmasebi are Iran’s representatives in the Olympics’ Greco-Roman wrestling competitions to be held from August 12-14.

Morad Mohammadi, Meysam Mostafa Jokar, Fardin Masoumi, Abbas Dabbaghi, Reza Yazdani, Saeid Ebrahimi and Mehdi Taqavi are the Iranian freestyle wrestlers, who will face their opponents in Beijing from August 16-21.

Masoud Haji Akhoundzadeh, Arash Miresmaeili, Ali Maloumat, Hamed Malekmohammadi, Hossein Qomi and Mohammadreza Roudaki are the Iranian judokas who will take part in the competitions from August 9-15.

Ehsan Haddadi has also revived Iran’s hopes of winning an Olympic medal in athletics. The 23-year-old broke his own Asian record in the discus throw with a 69.32-meter effort in the international track and field competitions in Estonia in June.

Abbas Samimi, Ehsan Mohajer Shojai, Sajjad Moradi, Amin Ebrahim Palnikfar and Hadi Sepehrzad will take part in the Olympics’ track and field competitions from August 15-24.

Mohsen Shadi (L) and Homa Hosseini

Iran’s basketball team has qualified for the first time since the 1948 London Olympic Games. Basketball is the only team sport in which Iran will takes part in, in Beijing.

Iran played acceptable games against Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz in Rocky Mountain Revue in Salt Lake City. Samad Nikkhah Bahrami and Hamed Haddadi are said to have caught the eye of big NBA clubs during the tournament.

In rowing, Mohsen Shadi and Homa Hosseini are the first Iranians to take part in Olympic Games.

Shadi won Iran’s first international rowing medal, in silver, at the world under-23 rowing championships in Germany in July. The 20-year-old also took part in the Senior World Rowing Championships in Austria, where he ranked fifth.

Hosseini, who will compete in the women’s single sculls, will carry Iran’s flag in the opening ceremony on August 8. The Olympics’ rowing competitions will be held from August 9-17.

Mohammad Alirezaei is also the first Iranian swimmer to have qualified for the Olympics, unlike previous games, where Iranian swimmers were given wildcards to take part in the games. Alirezaei will take part in the 100-meter breaststroke.

The rest of the Iranian athletes in the Olympic Games include Hojjatollah Vaezi and Najmeh Abtin (archery); Kaveh Mahrabi (badminton); Mehdi Qorbani, Ali Mazaheri, Morteza Sepahvandi (boxing); Qader Mizbani, Hossein Asgari and Mehdi Sohrabi (cycling) and Afshin Norouzi (table tennis).

The Beijing Olympic Games will be held from August 8-24.
