Iran beat Kazakhstan 75-62 and reached final for the first time in its history in Basketball. The winner of this tournament will qualify for 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Iran was helped by Mahdi Kamrany and Hamed Afagh Eslamieh who both scored 14 points a piece and ran a 26-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. A position of comfort, from where they never looked back.

Mahdi Kamrany scored 14 points and Hamed Hadadi collected 13 rebounds for Iran to win Kazakhstan. This is Iran’s first basketball Asian Cup final.

Iran won the bronze medal in Doha Asian Olympic games as its first ever title in basketball 8 months ago. Iran however, in the first round of the tournament lost the game against Lebanon 82-60 and qualified to quarterfinal as second team from group E.

In the other semifinal game, Lebanon beat South Korea 76-74 in a close match.

“We had come well prepared,” said Iran coach Toroman Rajkov. “I think we had an excellent first half, but the lead we built in the first half was little too big for our own comfort. During the break, I had to remind my players repeatedly to keep focused. Some of them had started to even celebrate,” the coach said.

Kazakh coach, Vitaliy Strebkov said, “we came here totally hopeless and we entered the semifinals. I think that’s a good result for us.”

The final match of Fiba Asia Cup will be held in Tokushima, Japan on Sunday 05 August 2007.
