South Korea has beaten Iran 4-2 in penalty shootouts after the two teams ended in a 0-0 draw in the 14th Asian Cup quarterfinal.As the game ended in a goalless draw, the match went into extra time with none of the teams managing to score a goal.

Iran’s Captain Mehdi Mahdavikia and Rassoul Khatibi missed their spot-kicks. But, only Kim Do-heon missed his kick on the side of Koreans.Kim Jung-woo scored the winning kick to send the inexperienced Koreans through to meet Iraq at the Bukit Jalil Stadium on Wednesday.Iran substituted the goalkeeper Vahid Taliblou for Hassan Roudbarian in the 119th minute.

That was the fourth consecutive Iran-South Korea face-off in an Asian Cup quarterfinal game, with the West Asians holding the advantage.
Iran won 4-3 in Jinan, China, three years ago while the Koreans triumphed 2-1 with Lee Dong-gook’s Golden Goal in Lebanon Asian Cup 2000. Again, it was Iran that beat South Korea 6-2 in the United Arab Emirates in 1996.

Pim Verbeek’s players had the cooler heads in the shootout, sending their more than 4,000 vocal Korean supporters into ecstasy.

Now, the white jerseys have to return home, while their team widely considered as the potential Asian Cup champion.
