Boonen wins Tour de France stage 12

Belgian cyclist, Tom Boonen won stage 12 of the Tour de France in Castres ahead of green jersey rivals Erik Zabel and Robbie Hunter.

It was only in the final three kilometers of 12th stage of the Tour de France 2007, from Montpellier to Castre, that Tom Boonen moved forward to set up a lead-out train that delivered the green jersey to the front at exactly the right time.The winner of stage six held off all the other sprint specialists to claim his second stage victory this year and the sixth of his career. He beat his two closest rivals in the points classification, Erik Zabel and Robbie Hunter.There were 168 riders at the start. At the first place, tournament leader Michael Rasmussen finished safely in the pack, along with the rest of the contenders for the gold jersey, while Fabian Cancellara conserved his energy for Saturday’s time-trial, rolling in over six minutes off the pace.

The 13th stage will be held on Saturday 21 July, time-trial in Albi for 54km. Rasmussen (Denmark) is the overall leader by 57h 37′ 10″, Alejandro Valverde (Spain) is in second place by 57h 39′ 45″ and Iban Mayo (Spain) is third by 57h 39′ 49″.
